The Map Pack, explained

What is Google Business Profile optimization?

Google Business Profile (GBP) optimization is the ongoing work of making your free Google listing, formerly called Google My Business, complete, accurate and active, so Google shows it for the searches your customers make. It covers your categories, services, service area, hours, photos, posts, products and reviews.

Your profile decides whether you appear in the Map Pack, also called the local 3-pack: the three businesses Google shows on a map above the regular results for searches like “plumber near me.” Those three get most of the calls.

Map Pack ranking

How do you rank in the Google Map Pack?

Google says local rankings come down to three things: relevance, distance and prominence. You can’t move your address, so we work hard on the others, and keep your profile active.

Relevance: matching what people search

The right primary and secondary categories, services, attributes and description for what people search, backed up by your website.

Distance: how close you are to the searcher

You can’t move closer to every searcher, but an accurate service area and a website that names your towns help you show up where you really work.

Prominence: reviews, listings and reputation

Reviews, matching listings across directories, local links and mentions that tell Google your business is well known and trusted.

Profile activity: posts, photos and replies

Not an official factor, but regular posts, fresh photos and a reply to every review show Google, and customers, that you’re open and responsive.

What’s included

What’s included in Google Business Profile optimization?

Everything on your profile, plus the signals around it that Google checks.

Profile audit and rebuild

Primary and secondary categories, services, attributes, hours, holiday hours, description and service area, set up the way Google reads them.

Google posts and photos

How we work

How long does it take to rank in the Google Map Pack?

Profile updates usually show within 2 to 4 weeks. Most clients see real Map Pack movement in 60 to 120 days. Smaller towns and less crowded categories move faster; busy city categories take longer.

Frequently asked questions about Google Business Profile and the Map Pack

Google Business Profile optimization is the ongoing work of keeping your free Google listing complete, accurate and active: categories, services, service area, hours, photos, posts, products and reviews. It’s the main lever for showing up in the Google Map Pack.

Yes. Google renamed Google My Business (GMB) to Google Business Profile (GBP) in 2021 and 2022. It’s the same listing, and people still search both names.

The Map Pack, also called the local 3-pack or local pack, is the box of three businesses Google shows on a map above the regular results for local searches. Most of the calls from a local search go to those three.

Google has said local results are based on relevance (how well your business matches the search), distance (how close you are to the searcher) and prominence (how well known and trusted you are, including reviews and links). Google explains these factors here.

Profile updates usually show within 2 to 4 weeks, and most clients see real Map Pack movement in 60 to 120 days. Your starting point and how crowded your category is both affect the pace.

Profile Setup is a one-time $450, and Profile Care is $299 a month for 4 posts, new photos, Q&A, watching for edits Google applies, a monthly summary and a quarterly map-grid check. Profile work is also included in every SEO plan, from $950 a month, which adds your website and listings. Monthly plans start with a three-month term, then run month to month.

Map Pack results depend on where the searcher is standing. You might be first in one neighborhood and eighth three miles away. That’s why we track rankings on a grid across your whole service area instead of from one spot.

No, and you should never use a fake or virtual-office address; Google suspends profiles for it. Service-area businesses use one profile at their real location, a service area that lists the towns they cover, and a website that names those towns.

Very. How many reviews you have, how recent they are, what they say and whether you reply all feed into prominence. Ask every happy customer, reply to every review, and never buy or fake them.

Weekly is a good habit, and our plans include 4, 8 or 12 posts a month. Regular posts and photos keep your profile looking active to Google and to the people comparing you with competitors.

Yes, the basics are free: claim your profile, choose the right categories, add photos and ask for reviews. Where most owners fall behind is consistency, keeping posts, photos, replies and listings up to date month after month.

Citations are listings of your business name, address and phone on other sites, such as Yelp, Apple Maps, Bing and industry directories. When they match everywhere, Google trusts your details more. See listings and citations.
