The short answer: no. Yelp is an important listing, and ChatGPT now uses Yelp reviews, ratings, photos and business details in its local answers. But all of that comes from your Yelp page, which is free, and Yelp says advertisers and non-advertisers are treated exactly the same by its review software. Advertising on Yelp alone is not going to get you into ChatGPT. A complete Yelp listing, plus your website, your Google Business Profile, your reviews and consistent listings everywhere else, is what does.
This post started with a sales call. A Yelp advertising rep kept our founder on the phone for 25 minutes, and the pitch leaned hard on AI: if you want ChatGPT to recommend you, you need to be on Yelp, and you need to be advertising. The first half has some truth in it. The second half does not. Here is how it really works.
Does ChatGPT use Yelp now?
Yes. In July 2026, Axios reported that Yelp is licensing its reviews, ratings, photos and other local business information to OpenAI, so ChatGPT can show Yelp content, with Yelp links, when people ask for local recommendations. Yelp’s “Request a Quote” feature is also planned for ChatGPT. The deal is not exclusive, so Yelp can license the same data to other AI companies.
Yelp shows up a lot. In BrightLocal’s August 2026 study of nearly 2 million AI citations for local searches, Yelp was by far ChatGPT’s most-cited source and appeared in 80% of ChatGPT’s answers. So the rep was right that Yelp matters. What matters is your Yelp page, not a Yelp ad.
What else does ChatGPT read about your business?
Yelp is one source, not the only one. ChatGPT’s search leans largely on Bing’s index, and an earlier BrightLocal study of 800 local searches found that business websites made up 58% of the sources ChatGPT showed. Other places it pulls from include:
- Your own website: your services, service area, prices, FAQs and contact details, written plainly.
- Bing Places and Bing search: the search engine behind much of ChatGPT’s web results.
- Directories and review sites: the BBB, Tripadvisor, OpenTable, Angi and industry sites all appeared in the 2026 study.
- Mentions of your business: local news, chamber pages, partner sites and articles that name you.
The common thread is consistency. When your name, address, phone number, services and hours match everywhere, an AI can trust what it reads. When they conflict, it is more likely to skip you or get your details wrong. We cover the full list in What an AI Sees When It Looks Up Your Business.
How does Yelp actually work?
Your listing is free
Any business can claim its Yelp page at no cost and update its hours, photos, services and contact details, and reply to reviews. That free page is what feeds Yelp search and, now, ChatGPT.
Software decides which reviews count
Yelp uses automated recommendation software to decide which reviews look reliable. Yelp’s own help center says about three quarters of reviews are recommended, the rest are moved to a “not currently recommended” section, and those do not count toward your star rating or review count. In its 2025 Trust & Safety Report, Yelp says it received about 22 million reviews that year and filtered out nearly 500,000 that looked AI-generated.
Yelp discourages asking for reviews
Unlike Google, Yelp tells businesses not to ask customers for reviews, and reviews its software thinks were requested by the business are often filtered. Offering anything in exchange for a review is against Yelp’s rules, and Yelp posts consumer alerts on pages it catches doing it. The practical move: ask for Google reviews, and simply let customers know you are on Yelp too.
Ads are pay-per-click, and they do not change your reviews
Yelp ads are a pay-per-click product: you set a budget and pay when someone clicks your ad. Yelp states that it treats reviews of advertisers and non-advertisers exactly the same. Business owners have long suspected otherwise, and some sued, but in Levitt v. Yelp (2014) a federal appeals court upheld the dismissal of those claims. Whatever you think of Yelp’s sales tactics, paying for ads is not a way to clean up your reviews or get into ChatGPT.
What should you do instead of paying for Yelp ads?
- Claim your free Yelp page. Fix your name, address, phone, hours, service area and categories, and add real photos.
- Reply to your Yelp reviews. Short, polite and personal, especially on the negative ones.
- Make your website easy for AI to read. Clear service pages, starting prices, an FAQ, your service area and schema markup.
- Build your Google reviews. Google lets you ask, so ask every customer. See how reviews decide whether AI recommends you.
- Claim Bing Places and Apple Business Connect. Both are free and both feed AI tools.
- Make your listings match everywhere. The data aggregators and the directories in your industry.
How do we handle Yelp for our local SEO clients?
We think Yelp is an important listing directory, especially now that ChatGPT reads it, so a Yelp listing is included in every directory listings package we offer. Every SEO plan needs at least 10 listings in place first, so our SEO clients get one. We just don’t think Yelp advertising on its own is the way to show up in ChatGPT.
- Your Yelp listing, included with your listings: we claim and set up your free Yelp page with the right name, phone, address or service area, hours, categories and photos.
- Yelp auto-sync ($20 a year): for our local SEO clients, we can add Yelp auto-sync using BrightLocal’s Active Sync Plus, which keeps your Yelp listing synced automatically with the rest of your listings so your details stay consistent.
- Everything else AI reads: your website, Google Business Profile, Bing Places, Apple Business Connect, data aggregators and the directories in your industry.
If you choose to advertise on Yelp, that is your call, and it can make sense in some industries. Treat it as one ad channel, not your plan for getting found in AI.
Common mistakes
- Ignoring Yelp completely. Your page exists whether you claim it or not, and now ChatGPT may quote it.
- Buying ads to “fix” a rating. Ads do not change which reviews Yelp recommends.
- Running review drives on Yelp. A sudden burst of requested reviews is likely to get filtered.
- Signing on the first call. Ask for the cost per click, the monthly cap, the contract length and how to cancel, in writing.
- Letting your details drift. Old hours or a former phone number on Yelp can end up in an AI answer.
A quick example
Imagine a house cleaning company in Florence, Kentucky. Its Yelp page was created by a customer years ago and still shows an old phone number. A Yelp rep calls and says the owner needs a $400-a-month ad package to show up in ChatGPT. Instead, the owner claims the free page, fixes the number and hours, adds photos and replies to the six reviews already there. Then they add an FAQ and starting prices to their website, claim Bing Places and keep asking every customer for a Google review. When someone asks ChatGPT for a house cleaner in Florence, every source it checks now tells the same, accurate story, without a single Yelp ad.
Checklist
- Yelp page claimed, with correct name, phone, address or service area, hours and categories
- Recent, real photos on Yelp and Google
- Replies to recent reviews on Yelp and Google
- Website with service pages, starting prices, FAQ and service area
- Bing Places and Apple Business Connect claimed
- The same name, address and phone on every listing
- A steady flow of Google reviews from real customers
Frequently asked questions
Do I have to pay Yelp to show up in ChatGPT?
No. The Yelp information ChatGPT can use, such as your reviews, rating, photos, hours and business details, comes from your Yelp page, and claiming that page is free. Yelp says its review software treats advertisers and non-advertisers exactly the same.
Can my business show up in ChatGPT without a Yelp page at all?
It can, because ChatGPT also reads business websites, Bing, and directories such as the BBB, Tripadvisor and industry sites. But Yelp is one of its most-cited local sources, so leaving your free Yelp page unclaimed or out of date makes it harder.
Will advertising on Yelp get rid of my bad reviews?
No. Yelp says paying for ads does not change how its software treats your reviews, and it does not remove reviews for advertisers. A calm, helpful reply to a bad review does more for you.
Why are some of my Yelp reviews “not currently recommended”?
Yelp’s automated software decides which reviews look most reliable. Reviews from new or inactive accounts, or reviews that look prompted by the business, are often filtered. Yelp says about three quarters of reviews are recommended, and filtered ones do not count toward your star rating.
Can I ask customers to review me on Yelp?
Yelp discourages it, and reviews it believes were requested by the business may be filtered. Ask for Google reviews directly instead, and let customers know they can find you on Yelp.
Do you set up Yelp for your clients?
Yes. Yelp is an important listing directory, so a Yelp listing is included in every directory listings package we offer, and every SEO client needs at least 10 listings in place before their plan starts. We also offer Yelp auto-sync using BrightLocal’s Active Sync Plus for $20 a year, which keeps their Yelp listing synced automatically with the rest of their listings. We don’t rely on Yelp advertising to get clients into ChatGPT.
Is Yelp advertising ever worth it?
It can be for some restaurants and home service businesses where customers already search Yelp. Treat it like any ad: know your cost per click, your budget cap and the contract terms, and track the calls and leads it sends. It is a separate decision from showing up in AI.
